Post Workout 3: Reverse Pivot Series
First, what’s a reverse pivot?
It also might be called an inside pivot, and looks like the gif here and is described in the video below. Basically, you are opening up to face-up your defender, rather than pivoting away.
You don’t have to dribble into the reverse pivot as you see here. Often, it is done off the catch to size-up your defender after catching the ball with your back to the basket.
Try these drills below to perfect your reverse pivot.
On to the Workout…
No need to re-invent the wheel, this is a great high post workout. I’ll break it down below.
High Post Reverse Pivot Series
All the moves start with a reverse pivot to face up the defender. You should do all the moves with a reverse pivot on your L foot and drive to the right for one set, and perform a reverse pivot on your R foot to drive to the L side of the lane.
Set 1: Reverse pivot, drive
The MOVES: L-foot pivot, drive RIGHT
R-hand Power lay-up: Reverse pivot on L foot, drive right, use the swerve technique to push the defender off, then jump off 2 feet, and go up with 2 hands.
Turn-around jumper middle: Reverse pivot on L foot, drive right as if going for a power lay-up, jump stop on both feet, pivot off high foot turning into a jumper.
Drive right, spin, lay-up left: Reverse pivot, drive R, spin off the low (L foot) into a L side lay-up.
Up-and-under move: the video shows the Kobe spin, but you will get called for traveling if you switch pivot fee. I suggest you make this an up-and-under move by driving right; jump stop on 2 feet and fake a shot with a 2-hand pump-fake; step through putting defender on your back for a lay-up.
Repeat the MOVES with a pivot on R foot and drive LEFT.
L-hand Power lay-up: Reverse pivot on R foot, drive left, use the swerve technique to push the defender off, then jump off 2 feet, and go up with 2 hands.
Turn-around jumper middle: Reverse pivot on R foot, drive left as if going for a power lay-up, jump stop on both feet, pivot off high foot spinning into a jumper.
Drive left, spin, lay-up right: Reverse pivot, drive L, spin off the low (R foot) into a R side lay-up.
Perform each move until you make the shot or lay-up, then proceed to the next move. Progress through all 4 moves (4 makes) 3 times on driving right and 3 times driving left.
These moves are NOT easy, meaning you will need to repeat them when you mess up the footwork. Don’t worry. The reps are about getting comfortable with the footwork BEFORE trying it in a game.
Driving from the high post is great, but after a while, your defender might sag off of you expecting the drive, or you might be playing a zone, and the close-out could be late. When this happens, and you have the open shot, you need to be able to knock down the 15-footer.
Set 2: Elbow Jumpers
Alternate from L to R elbow, shooting until you make it, and then moving to the opposite elbow. Start by spinning the ball to yourself with your back to the basket, reverse pivot to face the basket, and pull up for the jumper. Switch to the other elbow after making the shot. Go for 25 makes.
R elbow, reverse pivot, shoot (until you make it)
Switch to L elbow, reverse pivot, shoot.
Keep track of your progress…
