Post Workout 2: Quick spin

Watch these players performing the quick spin move, mostly to the baseline. Now, let’s break it down and watch it again after learning the steps of the quick spin.

  1. The player gets the ball, near the block, usually just a bit further out from the basket.

  2. After catching, the post player feels the defender on his back and notices him cutting off the drive to the lane.

  3. Now, the post player performs the quick spin, by quickly pivoting on the low foot. (This is the opposite of the drop-step which uses the high foot to pivot and seal the defender).

  4. While pivoting, the offensive player keeps his elbows out, shielding off the defender.

  5. After spinning off the defender, the post player then has his dribble to get to a shot, lay-up, or dunk.

You can also see Shaq body up the defender and then spin off when he is leaning in on him.

Watch how Hakeem Olajuwon teaches Dwight Howard here (starts video when he goes over the quick spin.

Workout 2

Set 1: Practice the footwork of the quick spin by yourself or with a defender. Start at the low or mid-post, catch a pass to yourself, feel the defender on your back, quickly spin on the low foot (closest to the baseline), into a dribble and finish at the rim.

  • From the R block (low or mid-block), catch, spin on low foot (L foot), dribble, same side lay-up x5 makes

  • From the R block, catch, spin on low foot, dribble, reverse lay-up (may need 2 or 3 dribbles) x5 makes

  • From the L block, catch, spin on low foot (R foot), dribble, same side lay-up x5 makes

  • From the L block, catch, spin on low foot, dribble, reverse lay-up x5 makes

Set 2: The quick spin can also get you a shot in the middle of the paint or on the baseline, which is hard (although Hakeem makes it look easy here). The quick spin into a baseline jumper is the same footwork as quick spin into the lay-up that you just did. You just don’t need to dribble, go right into the shot. The quick spin to the middle is off of the high foot, keep elbows out as before, take one dribble middle and pull-up into a shot.

  • From the R block (low or mid-block), catch, and spin on low foot (L foot) into a baseline jumper x5 makes

  • From the R block, catch, spin on high foot (R foot), dribble once or twice into a pull-up jumper or jump-hook x5 makes

From the L block, catch, spin on low foot (R foot) into a baseline jumper x5 makes

  • From the L block, catch, spin on high foot (L foot), dribble once or twice into a pull-up jumper or jump-hook x5 makes

Set 3: Go back and practice the footwork you learned in the first workout.

  • Jump hook middle from R block x 5 makes

  • Jump hook middle from L block x 5 makes

  • Drop-step off of the jump hook footwork from the R block (high foot pivots, low foot seals defender) x 5 makes

  • Drop-step from the L block x 5 makes

  • Jump hook fake into an up-and-under from R x 5 makes

  • Jump hook fake into an up-and-under from L x 5 makes
